A very dynamic work, swirling and tightly composed, we seem to be looking straight down a cliff face into the valley below, with a river or lake’s edge beyond that. Lismer experimented with composition often, the tangled, dense growth of the Georgian Bay shorelines required this, it was not an easy subject to tackle. The work also has echoes of his west coast tangles, and Lismer had been to Hawaii in 1938, as well as Australia and New Zealand the year before.Provenance
