Alfred Joseph Casson Canadian, 1898-1992

Casson’s journey with the Group of Seven began in 1926 when he was invited to join, replacing Franz Johnston. Mentored by Franklin Carmichael, Casson spent years exploring Ontario’s small towns, such as Elora and Alton, which became his primary subjects. His work is marked by a simplicity and focus on essentials. Beyond his artistic achievements, Casson was a prominent figure in Canadian art, serving as president of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts and the Ontario Society of Artists as well as Creative director of Sampson Matthews design form. His contributions to both fine art and graphic design cemented his legacy as one of Canada’s most influential and accomplished artists.
