Masters Gallery Ltd. first opened its doors at 2107 4th Street S.W., Calgary in the spring of 1976. The gallery was founded by Peter Ohler Sr., a retired CFL quarterback who had shifted his career to Art Dealing. Under his guidance, Masters Gallery became a community hub for the arts in Calgary, connecting with a public who wanted to learn, connect and share.
In 1983, Ohler hired Rod Green - at the time a biologist - and a regular at the gallery who shared the same passion for art. By 1986, Ohler had decided to move back to the West Coast, leaving the gallery in the capable hands of Green who directed the gallery over the next 30 years. In 2005 he was awarded the Alberta Centennial Medal, and in 2008 the Eric L. Harvie award for his contributions to the arts in Calgary. Upon his retirement in 2016, his son Ryan Green became the owner and President of Masters Gallery.
Ryan Green has over 20 years of experience as a dealer of Canadian historical, post war and contemporary art. He received a Master of Arts in the History of Art from the University College London, England, and holds a Bachelor of Arts in Art History from the University of Calgary. He is the founder of Young Masters, a collaborative initiative with Masters Gallery and the Calgary Public School Board to introduce elementary school students to Canadian art, artists and art appreciation.
