About the Artist

Born in Madrid in 1960, José Manual Ballester studied Fine Arts at the Complutense University in Madrid, graduating in 1984. His artistic career began in painting with a special interest for the techniques in the Italian and Flemish schools of the 15th and 18th century. From 1990 onwards, he began pairing painting and photography. His work has always focused on open spaces, public spaces, industrial zones or sites under construction or undergoing transformation. In 2010, he was awarded the National Photography Award by the Ministry of Culture of Spain in 2010 for his “personal trajectory, his unique interpretation of architectural space and light, and for his outstanding contribution to the renewal of photographic techniques.”

Among his numerous exhibitions are Places of Passage (Valencia, 2003) Setting Out (New York, 2003) Room 523 (National Museum of Art Reina Sofia, 2005) or Woods of Light (Kursaai, 2015). Collectively he has exhibited numerous times at ARCO, Art Institute of Chicago – Art Chicago, Art Forum Berlin of Germany and Paris Photo, among other exhibitions. In 1999, 2000 and 2002 he received the National Engraving Institute and his works are part of the collections of the Reina Sofia Museum, the Marugame Hiral Museum of Spanish Contemporary Art (Japan) and the Basque Museum of Contemporary Art – ARTIUM (Vitoria), among others.
